Cairns is easily accessible by air and is the major gateway to Australia's Great Barrier Reef. Situated on a wide coastal plain between the Coral Sea and the Atherton Tableland section of the Great Dividing Range, it is on Trinity Inlet and in the area where both the Mulgrave River and the Barron River reach the sea. Much of the activity centers on the Trinity Wharf area and along The Esplanade and many of the day and multi-day Cairns & the Tropical North Tours & Activities, especially Great Barrier Reef Trips, leave from the Cairns Marina.

If you want to stay near the Casino and the Downtown restaurant and nightlife action, Cairns City is the place to locate your hotel. If you want a quieter time of it, the Northern Beaches area is more sedate, secluded and expensive. The quiet solitude of a walk on a deserted beach near beside the Coral Sea carries a price tag, but is worth it if romance and being away from the crowds are what you are seeking.

Cairns City Hotels.
When searching for hotel accommodation near The Esplanade and the Cairns Marina, try to stay within a Kilometre of the Central Cairns Business District, but always keep proximity to the Coral Sea, The Esplanade and the Cairns Marina in mind. Ideally located is the Mercure Cairns Harbourside Hotel, with absolute water frontage and sweeping views out over Trinity Bay from the upper floor, water facing rooms.

Back from The Esplanade a few blocks, but a self contained oasis within the City, the Cairns Colonial Club Resort offers a great experience of tropical surroundings with a "clubby" feel to the public areas, pools and gardens. Another good budget option is the Acacia Court Hotel Cairns, well located and reasonably priced.

Back in the early days of Cairns tourism, Lee Marvin was one of the old time celebrities who visited, mainly for the world class Marlin fishing. He used to stay at the now updated and modernized Pacific International Hotel Cairns. One of the suites is named after this Hollywood Icon in honor of his many stays at the hotel.

Northern Beaches Hotels.
To get away from the bustle of downtown Cairns, look or hotels on Trinity Beach, Kewarra Beach and Palm Cove. Many of these properties have absolute beach frontage, and offer the chance to walk on the beach beside the Coral Sea. Trinity Beach House Cairns has been recently renovated and offers quality accommodation at reasonable rates. A more upscale option, the Kewarra Beach Resort Cairns also enjoys absolute beach frontage. It is well worth considering.

Palm Cove is situated about 10 Kms north of Cairns City, but the beach is almost deserted most days, while there is a well established township to back up accommodation with shops, restaurants and activities. Apartment Hotels in Cairns
For a longer stay in the Cairns area, an apartment with all the conveniences and food preparation facilities may be the way to go to keep meal coasts and family expenses under control.
