In 1835, when John Batman and John Pascoe Fawkner (look for those names as Melbourne Landmarks - Batman Bridge, Fawkner Park, etc.) settled the area on the north side of the Yarra River where the Rod Laver Tennis Pavilion now stands, they could not have envisaged the vibrant, interesting and European Style Australian city that has become modern day Melbourne. With its wide boulevards, excellent tram (streetcar) system, street cafes, interesting alleyways, shopping precincts, and beautifully laid out parks, Melbourne provides a real contrast to the bustle of Sydney. Melbourne is a city to savour, one to explore on foot and by using the trams, and the railway system.
Melbourne has built up around the Yarra River, but it is only in the past 20 years that the Docklands and Downtown area centered on the Flinders Street Railway Station and Southbank have been developed. Federation Square, opposite the Flinders Street Railway Station provides a focal point for discovery of the Downtown area. Our experience is that your accommodation should be within a Kiliometre of Federation Square and the Southbank area to be sure you don't waste time and money getting to the major Icons of the city.

Melbourne City Hotels
The best area to stay in in Downtown Melbourne is within the rectangle formed by Flinders Street along the Yarra River, Spring Street running past the Houses of Parliament and the Treasury Gardens, Lonsdale Street, and then back to the Yarra River along Spencer Street. This part of the Melbourne Downtown area will put you within walking distance of Southbank, Docklands, Federation Square, the Flinders Street Railway Station. and Fitzroy Gardens. Situated on Collins Street, the Sofitel Melbourne on collins can be the focal point of your stay in Melbourne. It is well located in a major shopping and restaurant area of Downtown.
A more budget hotel in the Bourke Street / Swanson Street area, the Victoria Hotel Melbourne, offers a great location in an older style hotel with good solid amenities. Another good budget hotel worth considering is the Vibe Savoy Hotel Melbourne, well located and reasonably priced.
For a touch of history and the class of a bygone age, have a look at the Hotel Windsor Melbourne. Morning or Afternoon Tea at the Windsor is an experience that harks back to the days when Australia was a colony of England.
Southbank Hotels
If you want to stay above the action at the Crown Casino, the Crown Towers Melbourne has some spectacular rooms with Melbourne City Views. Nothing directly on Southbank is budget priced, but look at the The Langham Melbourne for a location that cannot be beaten.
Hotels on a park
Slightly outside the Downtown Melbourne rectangle, the Hilton on the Park Melbourne nestles up to the fashionable inner suburb of East Melbourne and is directly on Fitzroy Gardens. The Hotel Lindrum Melbourne is set on the corner of Flinders Street and Spring Street, and is only metres from the Treasury Gardens. The Hotel Lindrum takes its name from the owner of the well known Pool and Billiards Hall that occupied the building for many years as a famous Melbourne landmark before the property was converted into a very stylish accommodation.
