Lamington National Park.
The first European settlers arrived in the hills and valleys of the heavily timbered area inland from Brisbane in the mid 1800's, but it was not until 1915 that the Lamington National Park was proclaimed. Named after Lord Lamington, then Governor of Queensland, it has become a major habitat of Australian Wildlife and birdlife in particular. Lord Lamington also gave his name to the Iconic Australian dessert, the "Lammo", or Lamington Cake. Accommodation in the Lamington National Park is at Canungra - Australian.com - Hotels in Canungra. For a day in Lamington from Brisbane, the excellent O'Reilly's Lamington National Park and Tree Top Canopy Tour is available from Brisbane City.

Australia Zoo.
The legacy of the famous Steve Irwin, and now operated by his wife, Terry, the Australia Zoo is one of the most famous names in Australian Tourism. Steve Irwin was tragically killed in a Barrier Reef diving accident in September of 2006, but "The Crocodile Hunter's" Australia Zoo continues to draw thousands of visitors yearly. It can easily be visited on the Australia Zoo by Croc Express Coach Tour from Brisbane.

Noosa and the Sunshine Coast.
As you drive north from Brisbane, the road swings inland as it passes the Bribie Island National Park and then allows you to swing back to the coast at Caloundra. This is an area of wonderful beaches stretching north through Maroochydore, Marcoola and Sunrise Beach before arriving at Noosa. The sand is golden, the waters of the Pacific Ocean clear and the area provides some of the best warm water surfing in Australia. Noosa & Sunshine Coast Deals & Specials are available from Brisbane. If you are driving yourself to the Sunshine Coast, find your hotel at Australian.com - Hotels in Noosa.

Fraser Island.
Leaving Noosa , the main road swings inland again, becoming the A1 just near Gympie and then heading north to Maryborough, the main access point for Fraser Island. Some 200 Kms (120 miles) north of Brisbane, Fraser Island is reputedly the largest sand island in the world. It has a number of interesting natural features, from Eucalyptus woodlands to high sand dunes and coastal heath areas. It is ecologically unusual in that it has a type of fungus that grows in the sand and releases nutrients that allow vegetation to grow in an otherwise inhospitable environment. The Fraser Island 4WD Eco Day Trip is available from Brisbane to experience the unusual nature of this Australian National Park and World Heritage area.
