Darwin Kakadu Litchfield Tiwi Islands Sample Travel Planning Itinerary for Australia
Example Itinerary for Darwin, Kakadu,
Litchfield and the Tiwi Islands
This page is designed to give you an example as to how our Custom Travel Planning itineraries are presented.
Please note that what follows is meant to be an example of the STYLE of itinerary that we will produce for Darwin, Kakadu National Park, Litchfield National Park and the Tiwi Islands area.
It is not necessarily exactly what your planner will suggest for you while in the Darwin area. Distances in the "Top End" of Australia are huge and it is going to take time to move around. Your complete itinerary will be set up from scratch and will reflect exactly what you want from your trip.

Read through what follows. It will give you a very good "feel" for the itinerary we will produce. Please remember that this is only a "snapshot" of the STYLE of the itinerary we will present for your consideration. Your full itinerary will be produced by your Australian Travel Planner.
For this sample itinerary we will give you a cross section of what is available - there are a lot of options and styles of accommodation and group size available - discuss these with your Australian Travel Planner.
Day 1. Kakadu National Park Overnight.
You will be collected from your Darwin Hotel and will follow Stuart and Arnhem Highways past the Marrakai Plains, Adelaide, Mary and Wildman River areas into the Kakadu National Park. After crossing the South Alligator River, explore the World Heritage Area of Ubirr Rock and take the chance to climb up through ancient Aboriginal rock art galleries to a lookout for views over surrounding wetland areas.
There will be a visit to the Boweall Center with its informative displays and then on to Cooinda to join Kakadu's fabled Yellow Waters Wetland cruise. Park Entry Fees and Lunch are included in the day. All other meals are own cost.
Accommodation.
Your accommodation is included at Kakadu.

Day 2. Kakadu and back to Darwin.
The morning will be spent in the Nourangie Rock region and the Anbnagbang Billabong, where you will have the opportunity to enjoy excellent Arnhemland Escarpment views, ancient Aboriginal occupation sites and pristine freshwater environs. After lunch (included), venture off the beaten track to Barramundi Gorge where a 2 Km (1.2 Mile) walk through the Monsoon Rainforest takes you to a small waterfall and a clear natural plunge pool.

During the late afternoon make your way back out of Kakadu National Park, looking around the Jabiru Township and pausing for an evening snack (own expense) at the Bark Hut Inn. Arrive back in Darwin mid-evening. (In the event seasonal conditions prevent access to Ubirr Rock, the group will visit other attractions such as Gubarra Pools, Nanguluwur or Nawulandja).

Special Note:
This tour is suitable for all ages, however a reasonable level of fitness is required. All travelers are encouraged to have adequate travel insurance.
Accommodation.
Our included accommodation in Darwin is located centrally on the Esplanade, perfectly positioned to capture the views and the breezes of Darwin Harbor, overlooking tropical Bicentennial Park and the foreshore.
The Hotel offers international style accommodation, but retains a distinctive Australian "feel" about it.
Day 3. The Tiwi Islands.
Full Day Bathurst Island Aboriginal Community Experience.
After a spectacular scenic flight north from the City, arrive at the modern community of Nguiu. Visit the Museum and old Mission Precinct before joining Tiwi ladies for morning tea before visiting some of the successful businesses that have grown producing arts and crafts. This will give you the opportunity to purchase artifacts and craft work direct from the artisans.

Leave the Aboriginal community for a scenic drive through the wilderness of the Tiwi Islands, to Tomorapi waterfall, a beautiful, untouched, crystal-clear fresh water swimming hole. Lunch will be in the shade beside the water hole and there will be time for a relaxing, cooling swim and a wander along the scenic walking tracks around a natural rainforest.

Later, head back towards the Aboriginal community, stopping on the way to visit a Tiwi burial site to learn about the Tiwi people's culture and burial customs. The return flight to Darwin will arrive back on the mainland at about 5.30pm.
Included:
Mini bus or 4 WD vehicle, permits and fees, competent Tiwi and/or Northern Territory resident guide and lunch.
Please Bring with you:
In a small overnight bag, bathing suit and towel, sunscreen, hat, personal requisites, comfortable clothes, walking shoes, camera and insect repellent.
Special Note:
The roads can be dusty. This is not a place for your best clothes.
Accommodation.

Alternative or Additional visit to Litchfield National Park.
Instead of any of the above options, or as an additional day or multi day experience, visits to Litchfield National Park are available. Talk to your Australian Travel Planner about including it in your itinerary.
