Map of Melbourne Australia
Full Interactive Melbourne Map
Melbourne is a very "European" style of Australian city. With its extensive system of trams (streetcars), good buses, and an excellent suburban railway system, it is a very easy place in which to get around using the public transport. Many of the inner city suburbs can be accessed by tram and it makes for a very interesting time of exploring using the system in the same fashion as the locals. The wide streets, boulevards and parks of the area surrounding the Downtown area provide a stark contrast to the many laneways, arcades and shopping nooks of the Central Business District. Melbourne is a very safe city, so don't be afraid to poke around in the interesting corners to find the unexpected.

Southbank, Docklands and the Yarra River
Melbourne has historically grown up around the Yarra River and the "heart" of the Downtown area is the Flinders Street Bridge and the Flinders Street Railway Station. On the south side of the Yarra River, the southbank precinct stretches from the Flinders Street Bridge to the Crown Casino, while on the city side of the River, the walkways stretch from the Flinders Street Bridge to the newer Docklands precinct. There are any number of interesting Tours of Melbourne and the surrounding areas, including the Yarra Valley, the Phillip Island Penguin Parade and the Great Ocean Road.
There are some excellent walks on the footpaths on both sides of the River heading inland from Southbank and the Flinders Street Bridge, where the the Yarra River winds its way past the Rod Laver Tennis Pavilion and past the Botanical Gardens and into the inner city suburbs of Richmond and South Yarra.
