When the First Fleet finally pulled into Campbell's Cove in 1788 and the settlement of Australia was begun, the area quickly became known as "The Rocks". The modern city of Sydney today is a far cry from the vacant land found by the first settlers, but the rocks is still the focal point of the city. Campbell's Cove is today dominated by the Sydney Harbour Bridge on the left, and the Sydney Opera House on the right, with the ferry terminals and circular Quay (Pronounced "Key) in the middle. The first time visitor to Sydney is always impressed by the history of The Rocks, its alleyways and back lanes, its irregular streets and the fact that so much of the historic architecture has been preserved. It is the focal point of a first visit to Sydney, and it is within walking distance of The Rocks, Circular Quay and the Sydney Opera House that you might want to search for accommodation. Anywhere within a Kilometre of Circular Quay is a good bet in Sydney Hotels.
The Central Business District of Sydney runs inland from Circular Quay, and it is here that many well located hotels are to be found. The Botanical Gardens flank the Eastern side of the C.B.D. and provide a wonderful open area with views out over the Harbour and the suburbs of the Northern Shore. Sydney Opera House is situated on Bennelong Point, jutting out into the Harbour and creating one of the most famous backdrops for a city anywhere. Sydney is indeed a class act.

One of the best located hotels in The Rocks is the Holiday Inn Old Sydney. Set in a new building, it is right in the heart of the Rocks and is a wonderful base for your stay in Sydney.

Set back from Circular Quay, but still within easy walking distance of The Rocks is the Sofitel Sydney Wentworth. This Central Business District Hotel is situated near Martin Place and is in the bustle of the Business area.
Just a short walk from The Rocks, and located next to Wynyard Underground Rail Station, is The Menzies Sydney, offering great value in standard hotel style rooms and services.
Darling Harbour is set about a Kilometre from The Rocks, and there is a wide range of budget hotels in the area. Well worth checking is the Ibis Hotel Darling Harbour Sydney for lower priced hotel accommodation. Darling Harbour is easily accessible to The Rocks, Circular Quay and the Sydney Opera House by ferry or on foot.
