There is a Wealth of Natural and Aboriginal Rock Art and Cultural Sites in Kakadu
It is all about scenery, wildlife and Aboriginal Rock Art

Kakadu National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage listed area and contains examples of Australian Aboriginal Art – many of Australia’s finest examples of Aboriginal Rock Art are in the Kakadu National Park. You can visit the Kakadu National Park on many day or multi-day tours from Darwin.  There are excellent hotels and accommodation for a longer stay if you are driving yourself.

Kakadu National Park is absolutely huge, being some 200 Kms (120 miles) north to south and 100 Kms (60 miles) east to west, covering an area of 19,084 Sq.Km (7,646 Sq. Miles). Travel Destination Kakadu has a warm monsoonal climate and has both “Wet” and “Dry” seasons, as does Darwin. The climate and weather are very much the same as Darwin.

What to See:

Aboriginal Rock Art: Ubirr, Nourlangie Rock and Nanguluwur are the most famous, and can be visited with guides or on tours.

Mammals: Many mammals are nocturnal, but expect to see Wallabies, Kangaroos, Dingoes and Water Buffalo in the wild.

Birds: Over 280 species of birds, including a number of endangered and vulnerable species have made Travel Destination Kakadu an Important Bird Area as listed by Birdlife International.

Reptiles: The introduction of Cane Toads to Kakadu has severely impacted the native reptile population. Lizards, including the Frill Necked Lizard (an Australian icon), Goannas, saltwater and freshwater Crocodiles and Snakes can still be seen. Most snakes are nocturnal, not being able to withstand the noontime heat.

Insects: As you would expect in a warm moist climate, there are plenty of bugs. The huge termite mounds in the southern end of Travel Destination Kakadu are the most visible evidence of insect populations.

History of Kakadu:

The name Kakadu is a mispronunciation of the Aboriginal Word Gaagudju, the name for the language spoken in the area. The Aboriginal People have lived in Kakadu for about 40,000 years, and half of the land is today under the control of the 5,000 or so Aboriginal Inhabitants. There are over 5,000 registered Aboriginal Art Sites in Travel Destination Kakadu, many of them rock art sites. Between 1981 and 1992 a three step process registered the whole area as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
