Subclass 482: Common questions

Can I change employers on a 482 visa?

Yes, but you must find a new approved sponsor and have a new nomination approved before changing jobs. You have 60 days to find a new sponsor if your employment ends.

Does the 482 visa lead to permanent residency?

Yes. After working for your sponsor for two years, you may be eligible for the Subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme visa (permanent).

Can my family come with me on a 482 visa?

Yes. Your spouse or de facto partner and dependent children can apply as secondary applicants. They receive full work and study rights in Australia.

What is the Core Skills Occupation List?

The CSOL is a list of occupations the Australian government has identified as being in shortage. Your occupation must be on this list, or your salary must meet the Specialist Skills threshold (currently AUD $135,000+).

Overview

The Skills in Demand (SID) visa lets Australian employers sponsor skilled overseas workers to fill positions they cannot fill locally. It replaced the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa in December 2023 and offers three streams based on salary and occupation.

Who is this visa for?

  • Skilled workers with a confirmed job offer from an approved Australian employer
  • Workers in an occupation on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) or earning above AUD $135,000
  • Trades workers, engineers, healthcare professionals, and IT specialists in shortage
  • Those who want a clear pathway to permanent residency through employer nomination
  • Workers with at least 2 years of relevant work experience
