DESCRIPTION
A spectacular loop walk best suited for those with hiking experience
Starting at the Springs, half way up the mountain at 700m. The walk doesn’t mess around and we begin our ascent shortly after leaving the Springs. We pass through gorgeous eucalypt forest and past multiple streams, and enjoy lively bird life in this section. We continue up and are rewarded with a very short side trip to see the historic ruins of the ice houses – where ice was made for the enjoyment of Hobartians in the 1800s.
We continue on up until we reach the plateau of kunanyi. We walk through an impressive and technical section of dolerite boulders and cross true alpine vegetation. We then arrive at the summit of kunanyi / Mt Wellington at 1271m.
We enjoy the achievement, view and well deserved break at the top. We then start our descent back to the Springs via the iconic Zig Zag track. We pass columns of dolerite that tower ever upwards and enter sclerophyll forest once again before arriving back at the Springs.
A great varied walk where you get up close and personal with dolerite, enjoy varied vegetation and are rewarded with glorious views.
