DESCRIPTION
Let’s find out all about Mackay, it’s sugarcane and coal.
Come along for 6 hours of seeing what Mackay has to offer. The second largest sugar-producing area of Queensland, Mackay makes about 1/3 of Australia’s sugar.
We start in Mackay and Visit Fifth Lane Street Art, The Harbour, and Slade Point Lookout.
Then we head up the Pioneer Valley where you get to see Mackay’s Largest Sugar Mill at Racecourse and see how things work. The harvest season is from late May to November so look out for the machinery used to harvest the sugarcane in the fields. Then it’s off to Marian to visit the Azure Glass Studio to see this amazing glass artist’s work and the Azure shop. Then we work our way south through the canefields to Sarina. Here we stop at the Field Of Dreams Mackay Sugar Shed for a one-hour guided tour. There is also Rum tasting and a fantastic shop.
Then on the way back to Mackay, we visit the Mackay Bulk Ports Lookout. Here we learn all about the coal industry.
The Port of Hay Point is one of the biggest and most efficient coal ports in the world. The Port Administration building features a public viewing gallery offering fantastic views of the two coal terminals.
From the viewing area, you will see two separate coal terminals – the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal and the Hay Point Services Coal Terminal. The terminals are operated independently, each one comprises rail unloading equipment, stockpiles with stacking and reclaiming equipment, conveyors, and ship loaders on off-shore wharves. Loading takes place on a 24-hour per day, 365 days per year.
