DESCRIPTION
Join us at the historic ‘The Rocks’ district at one of Sydney’s top and longest pub/brewery The Lord Nelson for a dining experience to remember. First drink at the pub is on us (well we mean him – a reverred but slightly podgy ‘Lord Nelson’, your host for the evening). Afterwards we make our way to three of Sydney’s finest confidential bars. It’s a colourful casually themed night but the main purpose is meet, greet and merriment and learn a few things along the way. Its sure to be a wonderful night to find out a little more info about each other, the hiking and walking group and meet Sharon and Patrick.
These social nights are a regular occassion. We had a bonza time last occassion at the Sydney speak easy establishments. Feel free to join the group even if you are new to our organisation and get to experience historical Sydney with friendly people.
Here is the run down!
The Australian colonies in the late 1800s were a melting pot of different cultures and backgrounds. The colonies had their own governments and made their own laws. Towns had developed into capital cities, centres of trade and cultural life. The anti-authoritarian character of the ‘Australian Type’ was perpetuated by images of bushranging, the persistent eulogising of Ned Kelly, the independence, resolve and uprisings on the gold digging fields and the unionists of the late 19th century.
We will meet outside the Lord Nelson pub at the The Rocks. We will announce to you what to look out for so you can identify the group on your arrival at the meeting point after your RSVP is confirmed.
Then it’s dinner at the wonderful upstairs restuarant at The Lord Nelson. We will enjoy a 3 course meal and you will be able to choose between pork, lamb, steak, seafood and vegetarian meals. There is a lovely selection of meals to choose from including 3 wonderful deserts – Mojito Sorbet, chocolate caramel mouse and Affogato. Plenty of gluten free options also.
Before we leave we will definately be grabbing a photo with the portrait of Lord Nelson in the background. A must do at The Nelson.
After dinner we’ll take a walk to our first bar destination. We’ll be visiting three of Sydneys top bars starting at a colonial sandstone underground location in The Rocks area (the convicts side of town).
To get there we have to negotiate our way through the nostalgic alleyways of The Rocks, colonial structures, cobblestone paths using our supplied historic colonial map. On the flip side of the map are poems by Henry Lawson and Banjo Paterson which your tour leader will recite. It’s not that hard to find our way and is a little fun for 30 minutes before we arrive at our first bar. Don’t forget it is one of the most haunted areas of old Sydney town so keep your eyes open – Don’t worry, we haven’t lost anyone previously.
A bit of info about the bar:
This was once a bootmaker house but its transformation is amazing.
Its a warm and cosy, fine drinking bar and we will be ordering a nibbles/cheese platter to accompany the fine wines, whiskeys and beverages you may choose to try.
Choose wiskeys from Scotland, Ireland, Japan, USA and Australia to name a few. Such as:
Liberties, Old Fashioned: Slane Irish Whiskey, Giffard Banana, Guinness Reduction, St Remy Brandy Foam.
Cocktail: The Hallion: Benriach 10 Peated, Tia Maria, Lilet Blanc, De Bortoli Black Noble
Top the night with a fine wiskey.
After Confidential Bar 1 activities are complete we will pull out our pocket watches to check the time and will board local public transport to one of Sydney’s best Wiskey Bars (its underground and we will take you back to the bustling 1800’s -1920’s). Please bring your Opal Card or you can use a credit card to access the transport.
By this time of the evening verse’s of Henry’s and Banjo’s poetry may have have decended into pure vitriol however we will push on for the final leg of this bar experience in the name of Australian history.
To end the evening we are going to leave historic Sydney and travel in time to our last bar, a New Orleans vista, the quintessentail, delightful, eagerly feline louisiana style underground bar. Welcome to the After Party!

It’s a first class experience in the theme of the1800s.
In keeping with an 1800s Australian theme, we suggest that you may wish to dress in part or full period clothing such as long dresses with high collars, corsets, waistcoats, top hats, or bowler hats. It’s certainly not compulsory therfore please dress as you swill and accordingly. Main aim of the night is greet and merriment. Jeans, t-shirts or more formal will be nice.
You could also accessorize with pocket watches, parasols, or canes a period hankerchief. This would add an authentic touch to your experience.
The night ends late! Approximately 11pm – 12pm or perhaps there could be a tail but whose checking their pocket watches anyway?
