Day 1: Hobart to Central Plateau Wilderness

Taste fine single malt whisky or gin (at own expense), and wander around the impressive convict built and heritage-listed Georgian sandstone buildings.

Stop At: Bothwell, Bothwell, Tasmania
A short stop in the colonial town of Bothwell which is the gateway to the Central Highlands.
Duration: 30 minutes
Pass By: Great Lake, Central Plateau TAS 7304, Australia
Take in Australia’s second largest freshwater lake as we make our way around the Great Lake. The Great Lake sits one kilometre above sea level and supplies hydroelectricity as well as a bounty of fresh fish for keen anglers.

Settle into a place of divine comfort our home for the next 2 nights, with time for a short nature walk should you desire, or simply relax and enjoy the log-fire and ambience of the lodge.
Tonight, take a stroll by torchlight looking for wildlife, or on a clear night, turn out the lights and enjoy stargazing at the Milky Way above.

Day 2: Central Plateau Wilderness

After a hearty breakfast, a day of exploring the vast alpine landscape awaits you.
If you prefer to relax in the comfort of the lodge, you may wish to try an array of the finest Tasmanian cheese, wine, and spirits on offer (own cost), or simply take advantage of what is perhaps, the best fireplace in any wilderness lodge in Tasmania.

The World Heritage Area is a designated ‘free walking’ zone, so you may wish to wander among the lakes and tarns on foot. Your guide can recommend several terrific routes of varying lengths; a picnic lunch of refreshments at a tranquil spot by a lake or lookout can be set-up by your guide, waiting for you when you arrive.
Or, you may wish to cycle out to Lake Ada on well-formed gravel tracks, a 27km return trip made easy under the power of your E-bike. Explore the lagoon and nearby tarns, or relax at Ibbott Hutt, an alpine fishing hut on the very edge of tranquil Lake Ada, with views to peaks of The Walls of Jerusalem National Parks in the distance.
Perhaps, you’ll want to try your hand at catching some of the finest brown and rainbow trout in the Western Lakes? A professional guide can be arranged in advance, or you can utilise the Lodge’s rods (complimentary).

Opportunities to free walk the Central Plateau Conservation Area towards to the Walls of Jerusalem National Park and the Great Western Tiers.

We explore the Lake Augusta region taking in the flora and fauna of the Central Plateau region as we enjoy expansive views of the Walls of Jerusalem National Park and the Great Western Tiers Region as well as exploring the more recent hydro electric heritage of the region.

Day 3: Central Plateau Wilderness to Hobart

Enjoy another half day of adventure or relaxation, whichever is your preference, or a perhaps touch of both. If you wish to stay back at the lodge, rest and indulge to your heart’s content in the luxurious lounge area which boasts an outstanding range of literature on the fascinating history and natural landscape of this wilderness area.

Prepare to enjoy another half-day of adventure in the rugged and beautiful alpine highlands of the Central Plateau. Having heard the stories from your guide on the history of the area, including the Big River aboriginal tribe, first settlers including graziers and fur trappers, and later Hydroelectricity pioneers, you’ll look upon the now World Heritage protected landscapes with a new appreciation for the people who came before, and the harshness and conservation-value of the environment.
Your guide will offer options today, weather permitting, that might include exploring by E-bike or walking around Carter Lakes. You might also like to hike up to Split Rock Lookout and nearby Allison Hut, a restored shepherds hut, and imagine the rugged life of a high- country grazier in the early 1900’s.

Pass By: Liawenee, Liawenee, Tasmania
Liawenee, to the north of Miena, is known for its great fishing at nearby Great Lake and hosts several fishing events bringing people from all over Tasmania. Built near Great Lake and the River Ouse, the ex-Hydro village is now a residence for Inland Fisheries Services (IFS) and a Tasmania Police station.
Liawenee has a reputation of being the coldest town in Tasmania.
Stop At: Steppes TAS 7030, Australia
A short stop to take in the Historic Highlands Homestead showcasing the way of life in the harsh highlands climate. A short walk through the forest takes us to a series of sculptures dedicated to those people who love and care for the Highlands of Tasmania.

A short stop in the colonial town of Bothwell which is the gateway to the Central Highlands.

Pass By: Melton Mowbray, Melton Mowbray, Tasmania
From the 1820s and through the 1830s the area became a centre for wool growing, with the export trade in wool growing steadily resulting in the colony becoming quite prosperous. Now all that remains is the Melton Mowbray Hotel.
Stop At: Old Kempton Distillery, 26 Main St, Kempton, Tasmania 7030 Australia
Our final stop is in historic Kempton at an 1840’s country manor. You may wish to indulge in Devonshire tea, and optional gin and whisky tasting (all at own expense), before returning to Hobart mid-afternoon.
