A classic walk for those who are fit and are up for a challenge.
Starting at sea level at Macquarie Wharf the walk will take in Hobart’s beautiful harbour and city parks before joining the Hobart Rivulet train. After a break at Cascade Gardens, the walk heads off past Cascade Brewery, Australia’s oldest.
We then hit the proper bush trails.
Things start getting steep as we follow in Charles Darwin’s footsteps on the gorgeous Myrtle Gully Track through the stands of tree ferns and mighty swamp gums the tallest flowering plant on earth. After refuelling on some of Tassie’s best tucker at Junction Cabin we continue the walk, rock hopping through a couple of dolerite scree fields up to The Chalet for another much needed rest.
We take a break from the climbing for a while along the flat Organ Pipes Track, packed with an array of flowers, things get steep again for one more effort up the Zig Zag track through the tree line and up on to the alpine plateau and pinnacle of kunanyi / Mt Wellington at 1271m. Imagine taking in the spectacular views enjoying a drink, looking down and where you started out from, touching the River Derwent.
