Kalbarri’s Pink Lake is a unique natural wonder located in Western Australia. What makes this lake stand out is its vivid pink hue, which is caused by the presence of a type of algae known as Dunaliella salina. This particular species of algae thrives in highly salty environments and produces a red pigment called beta-carotene, which gives the lake its distinctive pink colour.

The colour of the lake can vary in intensity depending on the time of day and the weather conditions, with the most vibrant shades of pink usually visible during the midday hours when the sun is at its highest. The Pink Lake is also unique because of its location – it sits in the middle of a barren landscape of red sand dunes and is surrounded by the rugged, rocky terrain of Kalbarri National Park.

The lake is an important ecological site, providing a habitat for a range of bird species, including migratory waders and waterfowl.
