We leave the metropolis heading north. The journey leads via Lancelin to Cervantes, the gateway to Nambung National Park. The Pinnacles, among the state’s most visited natural wonders, are set in a flat, almost surreal desert landscape. Thousands of bizarre limestone pillars up to five meters high provide breathtaking photo opportunities on a walking tour. After an entertaining coastal drive via Jurien Bay and Leeman, we arrive in Geraldton, the sunniest city in Western Australia. A visit to Mount Scott provides an overview of Geraldton and Grey’s Bay, and hosts a memorial for the victims of the HMAS Sydney II warship, which sank off the coast. We end the day with a visit to the architecturally interesting St. Francis Xavier Cathedral in central Geraldton.
Accommodation: Hospitality Motel, Geraldton
Day 2: Geraldton – Kalbarri (B)
This morning we fly in a light aircraft to the Wallabi Islands of the Houtman Abrolhos Archipelago. In 1629, the Dutch trading ship Batavia wrecked here, followed by a bloody mutiny. Back on the mainland, we head along the coastal road via Port Gregory to Kalbarri National Park. The rugged coastal formations are stunningly beautiful. We arrive in the charming town of Kalbarri in the evening.
Accommodation: Kalbarri Edge Resort, Kalbarri
Day 3: Kalbarri – Monkey Mia (Shark Bay) (B)
After breakfast, we revisit Kalbarri National Park with breathtaking views into the Murchison Gorge. Depending on the season, we may see Western Australia’s famous wildflowers on our drive through the park into the Shark Bay World Heritage Area. In the afternoon, we reach Monkey Mia, home to the famous dolphins who voluntarily come to the shore almost daily. After dinner, a local Aboriginal guide enchants us with stories and didgeridoo sounds under the intense Western Australian starry sky.
Optional: Monkey Mia Sunset Cruise
Enjoy the stunning sights of the sky’s continual change of colours reflected off the sea during this relaxing 1.5-hour cruise. Purchase a drink from our fully licensed Ocean Lounge Bar, or bring your own (BYO permitted). A tranquil way to end the day.
Accommodation: Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort, Shark Bay
Day 4: Monkey Mia (Shark Bay) – Carnarvon (B)
In the morning, you can observe dolphin feeding up close and learn fascinating facts about these intelligent animals. The Shark Bay Interpretive Centre in Denham offers further insights into this World Heritage area. Onward journey includes a stop at the unique Shell Beach. At Hamelin Pool, we admire the world’s oldest living organisms – stromatolites. Today’s leg gives us a true taste of the Australian Outback as we reach Carnarvon.
Accommodation: Hospitality Motel, Carnarvon
Day 5: Carnarvon – Coral Bay – Exmouth (Ningaloo Reef) (B)
This morning we head to Coral Bay, at the southern end of Ningaloo Reef. Experts claim the marine life here is more diverse than at the Great Barrier Reef. The reef is close to shore and can be explored with fins and snorkel or via glass-bottom boat. Home to over 500 fish species, coral, rare sea stars, crabs, and lobsters. We continue to Exmouth in the north.
Accommodation: Mantarays Ningaloo Beach Resort, Exmouth
Day 6: Exmouth (Ningaloo Reef) (B)
The Vlaming Head Lighthouse offers panoramic views over North West Cape, the Ningaloo Reef, and the massive antennas of the Harold E. Holt Naval Station. We hike the Mandu Mandu Gorge in Cape Range National Park in search of rare rock wallabies. In picturesque Turquoise Bay, safe for swimming, we once again enjoy the Ningaloo Marine Park’s colorful underwater world.
Accommodation: Mantarays Ningaloo Beach Resort, Exmouth
Day 7: Exmouth – Karijini National Park (B)
We travel northeast through the Pilbara region – its Aboriginal name bilypara means “dry”. The region, almost twice the size of Germany, is characterized by red desert and mountain ranges. Our accommodation is in the heart of Karijini National Park, promising peace and a magical atmosphere.
Accommodation: Karijini Eco Retreat, Karijini National Park
Day 8: Karijini National Park (B/L)
The rocks in Western Australia’s second-largest national park are among the oldest on Earth, the landscape among the most colorful. The iron-rich red-brown plateau features countless gorges, permanent waterholes, and spectacular viewpoints. We hike to Fortescue Falls and Fern Pool and visit Oxer Lookout with views over four converging gorges.
Accommodation: Karijini Eco Retreat, Karijini National Park
Day 9: Karijini National Park – Port Hedland (B)
We enjoy the unique resort atmosphere before heading out of iron-ore country to Port Hedland. With luck, we’ll see one of the massive 2–3 km-long ore trains.
Accommodation: Hospitality Motel, Port Hedland
Day 10: Port Hedland – Broome (B)
Heading north, we travel through the sparse vegetation of the Great Sandy Desert. The Eighty Mile Beach, a stretch of dazzling white sand and turquoise sea, invites shell collecting and rest (though beware of rays, stonefish, and sharks!). In the evening, we arrive in Broome, Australia’s pearl capital.
Accommodation: Cable Beach Club Resort, Broome
Day 11: Broome City Tour (B)
Explore Broome, the tourist hub of the Kimberley region, with its intellectual-meets-bohemian flair. Chinatown is the heart of activity, with open-air cafés, restaurants, galleries, and pearl shops. Visit Sun Pictures, the world’s oldest open-air cinema. Learn about the multicultural history at the Chinese and Japanese cemeteries. Gantheaume Point reveals 130-million-year-old dinosaur footprints at low tide. In the nearby sea grow some of the world’s most desired pearls. Visit a pearl farm to learn more. Spend your free afternoon at Cable Beach, one of the world’s finest beaches.
Accommodation: Cable Beach Club Resort, Broome
Day 12: Broome – Fitzroy Crossing (B)
At Derby, we visit the notorious Prison Tree, a hollow Boab once used to detain Aboriginal prisoners. Continuing on the Great Northern Highway, we reach Fitzroy Crossing.
Accommodation: Fitzroy River Lodge, Fitzroy Crossing
Day 13: Fitzroy Crossing – Kununurra (B)
We begin with a boat tour in Geikie Gorge National Park through the 14 km-long, 30 m-deep gorge. Watch for freshwater crocodiles and remnants of an ancient reef. We continue to Halls Creek and detour to the China Wall – a natural white quartz formation. Drive through the Durack and Carr Boyd Ranges en route to Kununurra.
Accommodation: Kununurra Country Club Resort, Kununurra
Day 14: Kununurra – El Questro – Wyndham – Kununurra (B)
Early drive to El Questro Wilderness Park for a short gorge hike. Then on to Wyndham, the northernmost town in WA. Five Rivers Lookout offers views over the Ord, Forrest, King, Durack, and Pentecost Rivers, the Cambridge Gulf, and wetlands. Seasonally, we visit Marglu Billabong bird sanctuary. A stop at The Grotto, a waterfall-fed pool in the rainy season, concludes the day.
Accommodation: Kununurra Country Club Resort, Kununurra
Day 15: Kununurra – Ord River (B)
Around midday, we’re transferred to Lake Argyle. After visiting the Durack Homestead Museum and a lookout over the lake, we embark on a 55 km river cruise back to Kununurra, experiencing spectacular scenery, flora, and fauna, and a colorful sunset.
Accommodation: Kununurra Country Club Resort, Kununurra
Day 16: Kununurra – Bungle Bungle – Kununurra (B/L)
A highlight of the tour! Enjoy a scenic flight over Lake Argyle, Carr Boyd Range, and cattle stations before landing in a sandstone wonderland.
