Make the most of your visit to the historic Perth Mint by joining one of our hourly guided talks. The grand heritage building, vault and the original melting house provide the cues for extraordinary stories about Western Australia’s golden history and the Mint’s prolific output of priceless gold bars and coins.
Experience the mesmerising journey of gold discovery in Western Australia and The Perth Mint’s role from the early days through interactive displays, photographs and artefacts, all forming an impressive backdrop for the Mint’s glittering pure gold exhibits.
Record breaking coin
The centerpiece of the gold exhibition is the Australian Kangaroo One Tonne Gold Coin, the largest and most valuable coin in the world. Made from 99.99% pure gold, the coin has an 80cm diameter and is more than 12cm deep.
It’s held the Guinness World Record for the largest coin since 2012.
Live gold pour
Witness the amazing spectacle of a traditional gold pour in The Perth Mint’s original melting house. Pure gold is heated to molten temperatures and transformed into a gleaming solid gold bar before your eyes. The 19th century brick walls of the melting house are literally embedded with gold dust, accumulated over many decades of continuous refining.
Australia’s largest natural nugget collection
Early prospectors spent years working in harsh conditions in outback Australia in search of gold nuggets. They now form a Australia’s most dazzling collection of natural gold nuggets, wafers and crystals at the Mint.
View Newmont’s Normandy Nugget – the second largest gold nugget in existence weighing an impressive 25.5 kilograms (820 ounces). King Henry and The Karratha Queen – two of the most valuable gold and silver specimens in the world, are also on display.
Historic Perth Mint coin exhibition
Among the historic coins struck by The Perth Mint are:
• An 1899 gold sovereign – the very first coin produced in Perth
• The first copper decimal coin made in Australia – a 1966 dated 1 cent piece
• Two of the largest legal tender coins in the world – the 10 kilo Australian Lunar gold and silver bullion coins
